Beartooth’s Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) Helps Young Men Heal

At Beartooth Men’s Rehab, young men, ages 18-30, who have hit “rock bottom” can begin to climb out of harmful life issues created by their unhealthy choices. Our team of skilled recovery life coaches walks with each struggling young man as he takes a leap of faith and lands on solid ground in recovery. As he heals from his wounds and forms anew in the forge of the heart of Christ, he builds his moral consciousness, learns virtue, mends family relationships, and ultimately, becomes his best to reach his full potential. Our working cattle ranch also teaches young men a variety of vocational-technical trade skills. Visit our website to learn more!

For many, the teen and young adult years are some of the most difficult in life. Young men’s bodies go through changes, relationships become complex, we begin to learn social roles, and more than ever, our children are expected to grow up earlier. These changes may leave a young man feeling helpless, confused and pessimistic about the future.

Building powerful relationships with the horses helps troubled young men learn key relational skills and tools that translate to healthy relationships with peers, parents, and authority figures. Horses are very unique and they can read people better than people read one another. Therapists use the experience between a young man and the horse to find new ways to provide powerful therapeutic intervention. The interaction between the young man and the horse helps them become self-aware of issues that cause stagnation and confusion.

It is possible that Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy can reach clients where traditional therapy cannot. This is a powerful and effective approach that has lasting impact on young people, families and groups.

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy is one of our most effective and innovative modalities for addressing a wide range of therapeutic needs in young men. Through interactions with horses and with help from equine therapists, our young men discover and explore behaviors and relationship patterns that have become problematic in their day-to-day lives. The very size and strength of the horses can stir deeply buried emotions while simultaneously affording opportunities to identify and resolve practical matters of communication, empathy and basic interpersonal respect. Interactions with the horses bring up thoughts and behavior patterns that are related to the issues that have brought families seeking treatment for their struggling young man.

Equine therapy ushers in the learning experience of:

  • Self-worth and personal integrity
  • Evaluation and establishment of healthy relationships
  • Effective communication
  • Addiction recovery
  • Eating disorder recovery
  • The value of trust and respect in relationships
  • The dynamics of power in relationships (e.g., bullying vs. equity)
  • Assertiveness vs. aggressiveness
  • Respect for diversity and individuality
  • The importance of teamwork and community
  • Healing from trauma
