Our Christian Rehab Center Uses Experiential Therapy
Experiential therapy is a major component of what we offer at Beartooth Men’s Rehab. The location of our center amongst the scenic mountains of Wyoming naturally fits into the core philosophy of experiential rehab because it is, itself, an experience. Learn about the different aspects of our experiential rehab program below.
Nature-Focused Therapy
One of the most common examples of experiential therapy is nature and a natural wilderness setting for recovery and treatment. This is usually accomplished in adventure therapy, which uses intense activities to cut through the hum and drum of modern life and build a person’s inner being as you cut out the technology and permanent attachment to the internet that fills a person’s life. This may involve rafting, hiking, mountain climbing, horseback riding, or other nature-based activities. Adventure therapy is often very successful at working with young adults, especially young men.
The wilderness setting around Beartooth Men’s Rehab gives us an inherent advantage in adventure and other types of nature therapy.
Equine and Other Animal Therapies
The therapeutic use of animals is a powerful example of experiential therapy, frequently used in rehab and other treatment centers. The most common example is equine therapy, where patients help care for horses. Caring for another living creature builds a foundation of responsibility and compassion, which are important traits to becoming a better person. While horses are the most common example of animal-based therapy, dogs are also popular, and there are endless examples of animals that help build the same principles.
Our Christian rehab center uses equine therapy and other animal-based treatments. Many animals live at our ranch, and we encourage our patients to spend time with the animals to build an emotional and spiritual bond.
Expressive Therapy
Another example of experiential rehab is expressive therapy, which uses art, creativity, and personal expression to work through problematic emotions and deal with underlying issues. There are several key types of expressive therapies, which are classified based on the medium of expression that is used:
- Music Therapy
- Psychodrama
- Art Therapy
- Poetry Therapy
While expressive therapy isn’t the primary function of Beartooth Men’s Rehab, we can practice it at our center and embrace the potential of various rehabilitation methods.
