Experiential Therapy at Beartooth Men’s Rehab
At Beartooth Men’s Rehab, we provide a variety of opportunities for young men to work in therapeutic programs that will help them access their inner thoughts and feelings. Through experiential therapy, each young man is given the proper tools to work through their emotional and mental traumas. Here are just a few of the activities your loved one will partake in.
- Equine Therapy
- Group Therapy
- Ranch Work
- Cow Camp Mountain Experience
- Animal Husbandry
At Beartooth Men’s Rehab, we understand that putting a box around ‘when and where’ therapy takes place is restrictive to the progress of those in our program. On our large scale working cattle ranch, experiential therapy and experiential learning activities combine for ‘in-the-moment’ learning. This form of therapy can be emotionally taxing; creating genuine moments for honesty and expression are important for success.
We provide a setting for our young men to take emotional risks that they may otherwise never experience outside of the safety of our care. In the Beartooth Men’s Rehab environment, these men are required to leave their comfort zones. Only then can we help them face their fears, and ultimately help them discover their strengths. At the end of our program, they will leave with a fresh perspective. They will see the world, their peers, and themselves in a new light.
What Activities Does Beartooth Men’s Rehab Provide?
Although we provide many different forms of experiential therapy, we can separate our activities down to a general three categories:
- Equine & Animal Therapy
- Nature Therapy
- Reality Therapy
Equine & Animal Therapy
This form of therapy is often seen and used in various rehab facilities and treatment centers, and there’s not surprise as to why. Animals can have a therapeutic effect on students, and equine therapy has proven to be a powerful tool in the rehabilitation of those in our care. As a working cattle ranch, it is early on into their journey with us that young men will begin to take care of horses. Their relationship with our herd is pivotal to both the success of the ranch, and their personal progress.
Caring for another living being creates the framework and foundation for accepting responsibility, feeling compassion, and understanding the needs of themselves and others. These building blocks are important to any young man, and will become essential as they transition into adulthood. Our rehab programs primary focus on equine therapy, but the young men can learn a great deal from all of the animals they will encounter at the ranch. From the cattle, and the cattle dogs, to the wildlife native to the area. The time they spend with these animals will help them develop the emotional and spiritual bonds that they will carry with them into the future.
The use of nature, and wilderness settings can be great tools for recovery and experiential therapy treatments. By cutting off a majority of technology, and addictive attachments to devices, we are able to help young men recognize their inner selves. The setting of Beartooth Men’s Rehab gives our ranch the distinct advantage of easy access to nature, and natural therapy activities. This type of therapy is often very successful at working with young adults, especially young men. It gives them the opportunity to test themselves, realize their limitations, and get back in touch with their strengths.
The main purpose of reality therapy is to focus on the present–and not the past! Through patience, persistence, and openness, the student is able to discuss their emotions, and discover their physiological responses. The goal is not to excuse irresponsible behavior, but rather to empower the person to take responsibility for his choices and actions in life.
Focusing on a young man’s core beliefs, behavioral patterns, and choices, will help him realize that he does have control over his future. Even with our guidance, it is him, and only him, that will ultimately choose what sort of life he wants to lead.
Why Is Experiential Therapy Important?
- Allows for risk taking. In a traditional therapy session, students may not feel comfortable expressing themselves to the fullest extent. Timed, or traditional one-on-one therapy—although equally helpful for some—may not be the right direction for your son or loved one. It can feel restrictive, and may not give them the ample opportunities to be honest with themselves and those around them. Experiential forms of therapy feel far less restrictive, and are a more in-the-moment type of expression.
- Experiential therapy is relationship based. Building a bond between each young man, and the therapist, staff, and his family is invaluable. If the bond is strong, honesty and acceptance can be present. A young man’s team includes his clinicians, horse professionals, teachers, residential staff, and the animals themselves.
- Helps foster new interest and self-discovery. Although our forms of experiential therapy do not heavily rely on the traditional types of expressive outlets, the therapies we offer still place the young man’s focus on the activities. Through this, he is able to work through and better recognize his emotions. The goal is to gain a greater understanding of what a young man associates with a wide variety of positive and negative reactions, and how to identify their triggers; bolstering their self-esteem and helping them recognize both their strengths and weaknesses.
